Esther McCaffery Moran papers, 1961.

General description of the collection: The Esther McCaffery Moran papers include correspondence to Colonel Florence A. Blanchfield, United States (U.S.) Army (Ret.), and a resume of the orientation of Army nurses in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) and First Army. The 1951 letters were in response to Blanchfield's apparent request for information about the Army Nurses Corps (ANC) school in the ETO in World War II (WWII). Moran directs Blanchfield to other potential sources, but includes a "resume" of events leading to the creation of the ANC school at Schrievenham Barracks. The school graduated about 30 nurses every 2 to 3 weeks, with the first graduating 29 May 1943. In one of the letters, Moran mentions that she reread her diary. She recalled that Frances Slanger was killed by shrapnel from a German 88. Moran talks about a commanding officer (CO) evaluating personnel from a hospital because German SS were too close. She discusses that on the morning of the Battle of the Bulge, German troops ransacked nurses' barracks and "our tanks" rescued some nurses from capture. Moran says she was probably unpopular with COs, but she was there for her First Army nurses.
